How to replace a broken window

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
