How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
