How to replace a broken window

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
