How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
