How To
How do I replace a damaged window?
The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.
First step: Remove the old glass from its frame
To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.
Second step: Clean and polish the new glass
Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.
Third Step: Reinstall new glass
Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair any damage.
Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.
The fifth step is to seal the area.
Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.
Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
