How do I replace a damaged window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
