How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
